Micah Castelo is a graduate student in the Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism program and minority newspaper fellow at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She’s also a contributing writer for the Syracuse Post-Standard, a reporting fellow for the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and a freelance writer for Newhouse News.

She has a strong interest in covering environmental issues, agriculture, food policy and community news. In May 2019, she co-founded and served as the editor in chief of Rooted, a digital publication on modern homesteading, for her graduate capstone course. Two months later, she traveled back to her home country, the Philippines, to cover the Manila Bay restoration and how it affects informal settlers.

Her work has also appeared in Indian Country Today, Baltimore magazine and Baltimore Style magazine. As an undergraduate, she studied English, communication arts and women’s studies at Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore, Maryland.

And in her spare time, she enjoys learning how to cook in her small kitchen and playing with her three guinea pigs—Walt, Teddy and Sky—and her kitten, Peanut.
